A diet rich in antioxidants can help in protecting against knee arthritis.
People who have plenty of antioxidants in their diet can protect themselves from bone changes associated with knee arthritis. Antioxidants protect cells throughout the body from accumulating oxidative damage, which has been shown to play a role in osteoarthritis. The higher a persons intake of vitamin C, the lower is the risk of knee arthritis.
Australian researchers at Monash University studied 293 middle-aged men and women, who were followed up for a period of ten years. At the beginning of the study, these subjects were made to complete detailed questionnaires on their diet. During this period, they obtained all the nutrients through food, and not from supplements. Ten years later their knee was examined using MRI scan.
It was found that higher intake of vitamin C at the beginning of the study reduced the risk of bone changes 10 years later. Certain carotenoids, such as the lutein and zeaxanthin found in green vegetables, were also related to a lower risk of cartilage defects in the knee.
The results highlighted the potential of diet rich in antioxidants to modify the risk of osteoarthritis. Thus, the best way to get the full gamut of antioxidants in ones diet is to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day. By doing this, one can protect oneself against the risk of developing knee arthritis.
